After Pakistan defeated the West Indies in the first One-day International in the early hours of Thursday morning, Captain Babar Azam graciously awarded his man-of-the-match award to Khushdil Shah, whose close to the end power-hitting helped the hosts to a five-wicket victory.
Babar appeared in his third consecutive ODI to put his team in a position to win but it was Khushdil with 23 balls and 41 runs that proved to be crucial in the final as Pakistan pulled down 306 with four balls left.
It means Pakistan goes into the second ODI on Friday with a chance to close the series with a victory. Going to the first game, however, will not be easy for Pakistan.
If the intense heat on the Multan were not enough, Babar stated that the pitch was difficult to bat on.
“The wicket was doubled and it wasn’t that easy,” he said after the match. “It was hot but that is no excuse. Cricket is changing. We have to plan and play with a lot of energy. ”
Pakistan was in a state of panic as they needed 50 off 32 balls before Khushdil hit four six – in all corners of the ground – to ensure his team won the first international match in Multan after 14 years.
“Two years ago, I was working on this,” said Khushdil as he received the award for Outstanding Player. “I used to play a lot in the leg stump, and I started working a lot on the stump. The last two camps have been really profitable, with coaches working hard for me, in my beats, and once / twice. I was waiting for the balls to come into my place. ”
